Anakie Gorge 12km

Six amphibious hikers walked the 12.6 km long Anakie Gorge - Ted Errey Nature Circuit in Very soggy weather conditions. We started off from the Anakie Gorge picnic area and walked along a flat and pleasant path beside Stony Creek (dry), crossing and recrossing the creek bed by huge stepping stones. The gorge is short in length but has rocky bluffs and pretty bushland. I can't remember if it was raining already but for most of 12 km it poured, bucketed down, pelted, teemed, drizzled and finally, deluged until we were all drenched! Walking paths became small creek beds or ponds in places.

BUT, we were a resilient bunch and kept on in good spirits and enjoyed the Ted Errey Nature Circuit with its orchids, wallaby, flowering grasstrees, butterflies and varied birdsongs. At one of the lookouts we imagined the view of the Bellarine Peninsula (totally obscured by fog!) and thereafter gave lookouts a miss.

We had our morning tea and lunch at the end of the walk in a picnic shelter. Andrew was the envy of everyone when he pulled out a full set of dry clothes from his car and promptly changed into them. Meanwhile....we dripped.

The hike was a good mix of ups and downs and gentle bits and would be a good place to return to on a more clement day.

Did I mention the rain?
